Operating a fire truck pump requires the correct sequence of valve operation, water supply connection, pump priming, PTO engagement, and pump start-up. Before operating the system, the operator should confirm that the fire truck is safely positioned and that all valves, pipelines, and control devices are in the correct positions.

This guide describes the standard operating procedure for the fire pump system installed on the fire truck, covering pre-operation inspection, water intake, priming, pump operation, shutdown and post-operation drainage. The operator should follow each step carefully to ensure safe and reliable water supply.
Check the operating environment and confirm that the vehicle is safely parked.
Open the chassis battery switch to activate the vehicle electrical system.
Turn on the main power switch from the pump control panel.
Connect the suction hose to the water inlet and ensure that the connection is tight.
Open the water inlet control valve.
Pull the valve handle outward to open the valve.
Push the handle inward to close the valve.

Open the pump ball valve and keep it open during priming.
Close the main water outlet valve (pump inlet butterfly valve) before continuing the suction operation.
Close the pump drain ball valve.
If the pump and PTO will run continuously for more than 30 minutes, open the pump and PTO recirculating water valve for cooling.
Close the two side water outlet joints (four total) and keep the fire hydrant inlet valve closed.
Set the fire monitor control valve to the OFF position.

Start the truck engine and confirm that air pressure is above 0.6 MPa.
Depress the clutch, pull out the PTO control rod to engage the PTO, then release the clutch slowly.
On the control panel, press the water diversion control or vacuum pump button to start priming.
Adjust the throttle so that the rotation meter stays at 2000–3000 r/min, and the vacuum gauge stays at 0.02–0.04 MPa.
When water reaches the priming pipeline, turn off the water diversion control button. The pump can then continue drawing water automatically.

When the tank liquid level gauge reaches the maximum value and the tank is full of water, depress the clutch pedal and push in the PTO control rod to disengage the PTO.
After pump-in is complete, stop the engine, close the water inlet control valve, and open the pump drain ball valve if the pump must be drained.

To fill the water tank from a fire hydrant, connect the fire hydrant hose to the hydrant inlet, keep the outlet joints closed, and allow water to enter the tank under hydrant pressure.

| Problem | Possible Cause | Recommended Check |
| Pump fails to prime | Air leak in suction hose or connections | Check all fittings; reseal or tighten |
| Vacuum gauge reads zero | Incorrect valve position or leaking seal | Verify valve positions; inspect gaskets |
| Low water flow | Clogged strainer or restricted suction | Clean strainer; check suction hose |
| Pump loses prime | Suction hose lifted out of water | Submerge strainer deeper below surface |
| Pump overheating | Running dry or low flow for extended period | Increase flow; check for air in system |
Never operate the fire pump without an adequate water supply.
Monitor the vacuum gauge and rotation meter continuously during priming.
Do not exceed the pressure ratings of hoses, couplings, or the building standpipe system.
Drain the pump after operation to prevent freezing in cold weather and reduce corrosion during storage.
